"The sun'll come out, tomorrow!" (Annie) Hey y'a "The sun'll come out, tomorrow!" (Annie)

Hey y'all! I'm Alexia Maldonado Juarez and I'm a Research Assistant on this wonderful project! I consider my art to be a little hodgepodge goth as I'm very interested in diving into cycles of life and death through any material I can get my hands on.

Sustainability will be the food that feeds the next life cycle of the art world in the years to come. And I am fascinated by how we can remarry our practice to our body and nature! With this project, I can't wait to see how the sun can become an ally in this exploration!

Enjoy some sun and some chickens in the sun 🌞

Hi there! I’m Milena Pereira, Research Assistant Hi there! I’m Milena Pereira, Research Assistant on this Project. I am fascinated by how art can nuance and imagine so many facets of life experience, from what is known as "more serious" to popular art. As sustainability becomes a more and more relevant topic, I am curious to know how this concept unfolds into various meanings and practices for artists, thinkers, and myself.
Here are some pictures of last year's amazing solar eclipse!

Bastik, Mila Figuet, and Oriana Confente will be creating a performance as a group.

Bastik @bbbastik began her artistic practice at the young age of 4, as a student of Kay Tiga in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Practicing the “Artistic Rotation” method by roaming freely from ink to paint and clay; blurring the boundaries between mediums quickly became second nature to her. Today relocated in Tiohti:áke / Mooniyang / Montreal, she is a mechanical engineer and multidisciplinary artist exploring themes of connection, identity, as well as Haitian visual cultures of nature through a multitude of mediums.

Mila Figuet @_milamour is a performance artist and cultural worker based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. Her work bridges activism and art-making, with a focus on developing strategies to raise awareness about gender-based violence and building tools for collective protest and healing. She creates spaces and situations where the body, often the primary site of such violence, plays a central role and multiple voices resonate, interweaving personal experiences with the testimonies of the communities she engages with.

Oriana Confente @urghleshmeck is a writer and maker-of-things based in Tiohti:áke / Mooniyang / Montréal. Confente completed a Master of Arts in Rhetoric and Communication Design at the University of Waterloo (Canada), where they began developing research-creation projects. They continue to be research-driven while exploring concepts connected to postnatural ecologies and sustainable practices, with particular interest in more-than-human entanglements.

Isabella Leone @rockharlequin and Lucy Fandel @lucy.fandel will be performing as a duo.

Lucy Fandel is a dance artist and cultural mediator in Tiohtià:ke / Montreal. She grew up in Concord, MA (USA) and Beaulieu sur Mer (France) before studying dance and sociology at Concordia University. She likes places where water and wind circulate in strong currents. Through choreography, performance, teaching and writing, she explores how to connect to the poetry of movement within ourselves and in the world around us.
Isabella Leone is a performance maker, director and theatre designer. She is of settler descent and grew up on Syilx Okanagan territory in British Columbia. She has been based in Tiohtià:ke / Mooniyang / Montréal for ten years. Her work is guided by collaboration and experimentation, playing at the intersections of dance, puppetry, video, performance art, and installation. Through her practice, she fosters close attention to the worlds she inhabits, while threading together the realms of abstraction and the imaginary into things deemed known.

Sabina Gámez @sabina.gamez_ will be performing a solo, working with costume designer Lee Wilkins.

Sabina Gámez is an audiovisual artist currently pursuing her MFA in Intermedia at Concordia University (CA). She holds a Bachelor of Arts, focused on electronic media, with a minor in biology from Universidad de Los Andes (COL, 2018).
Her most recent research investigates the multi-dimensional role of the sun, examining its geopolitical, social, and environmental implications. She explores alternative practices inspired by the sun, adopting a Symbiocene approach that emphasizes a positive revaluation of our relationship with the world and its influence on human and ecological systems. Her work is informed by Solarpunk theories framing solar energy as a guide to re-evaluate pressing climate and social crises. Her work has been exhibited in Colombia, Mexico, South Korea, and Canada.

Good morning, starshine. The earth says, hello! (H Good morning, starshine. The earth says, hello! (HAIR via willy wonka)

Hello! My name is Zoë and this year I am an Undergraduate Research Assistant for this awesome project. I like to think I've got the artistic instincts of a racoon. I draw my strongest inspiration from the recycled materials I happen upon, utilizing them to create the fun and the random. Like a raccoon, I scavenge for garbage and reusables in thrift stores, recycle centres, and my own home, always asking myself what can I make with what I have?

In this way my practice is engaged with sustainability and I am excited to be a part of this project that is using art to creatively intervene in the climate crisis.

Prompt: if you could survive off of photosynthesis + any one food of your choice, what would it be?

Mine would be chocolate (note the willy wonka reference at the beginning)

On Wednesday, 28th March 2024 we took a trip to Mo On Wednesday, 28th March 2024 we took a trip to Montreal Est, just 45 minutes from downtown, to visit the site of a very large Suncor facility and explore the possibilities of using the City Hall Park as a space to hold performances and engage with sunlight as a source to uncover climate change.

What really struck us was the sheer size of these facilities along with their incredibly close proximity to peoples homes, bike paths and public parks.

We considered the natural angle of the sun in the Spring months, so we could plan performances, while scouting the area for safety concerns and possible large structures to reflect light on and off.

This site gives us the chance to play with incredible perspectives that showcase the natural landscape of the space in juxtaposition with the towering factory structures and large white cylindrical industry not far behind.

Principal Investigator Meghan Moe Beitiks and their research assistants Christine White, Carolie Delisle and Keith Fernandez will offer a report on the research thus far for Angles of Consequence, a SSRCH-funded project exploring reflected sunlight and global sites of climate warming and cooling. Come learn what we have discovered about the world's worst and best climate advocates.

Thank you to @leparc.milieux for hosting us.
With every passing season, we notice highly specif With every passing season, we notice highly specific changes to our climate. Summer is my favourite season, but the way that sunshine hits the snow in Montreal holds its own charm.

My name is Keith Fernandez. I'm an Undergraduate student in the BFA Performance Creation program at Concordia University and one of the research assistants on Angles of Consequence.

My own relationship with climate change manifests within my drag practice. I have an active project titled Sustainable Opulence where I explore how we can create drag through a sustainable lens, whether it be costume pieces, wigs, glitter and other elements of our artistic practice. I hold events that engage the local drag community through workshops that help them see the opulence in sustainability.

With Angles of Consequence, my research is focused on the main sources of CO2 Emissions across Canada and the findings have been invaluable towards our final project outcome. They have also shed light on major emitters across the nation.

Speaking of light, here are some of my favourite pictures of our Leading lady for Angles of Consequence - The Sun!
Hiyah ! I'm Carolie, Research Assistant for this a Hiyah ! I'm Carolie, Research Assistant for this amazing project focusing on sourcing, materiality and website management.

My own practice is centered on the meeting of technology, plants and design. My days are spent going from one project to the other either dismantling household electronics, taking care of my (numerous) plants, and discovering new materials to create innovative garments. 🌿 Always keeping in mind sustainable methods to add to my book.

🌞Prompt🌞: Which is your favorite sun?

Me: Mine is the Fall sun, just past the Autumnal Equinox, it becomes dimmer, gently enveloping each day, slowly lulling you to the long sleepless nights of winter.

The graph I've shared comes from the 'Reports of The graph I've shared comes from the

'Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and
Sustainable Development to the Parliament of Canada'

Entitled :

Emission Reductions Through
Greenhouse Gas Regulations.

A Report by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

It reveals some of the top sources of Greenhouse gases across Canada by sector in 2020 - my research is centred around this exploration.

Through the course of my research on the primary sources of C02 Emissions in Canada, it was very interesting to see who the key contributors were across the country, while also learning more about the oil, gas and aluminum industries based in Quebec. While these companies present a considerable 'sustainability report' primarily linked to community contributions, donations and social events, their negative impact on the environment far outweighs their contributions to society at large.

My research also revealed the close proximity of some industrial complexes in Quebec to large parks and hiking zones. The juxtaposition of the green open spaces to these C02 emitting structures poses an interesting exploration for our project that we look forward to diving into in the next phase.

*repost with improved images* Christine here! Wor *repost with improved images* Christine here!

Word on the street says that RBC invests the most into fossil fuels out of other banks in Canada. So I've been digging into the evidence...and the rumours are true.

❗Fun fact❗: ExxonMobil, self proclaims as "one of the world's largest publicly traded international oil and gas companies". Based in the US, they are ranked the #1, and RBC as #2 owners of the fossil-fuel sector in Canada (2015). But wait, how is ExxonMobil the number one 🍁 if they're all the way in Houston, TX?! 🧐 Turns out they own 69.9% of Imperial Oil, a Canadian based company that "do business across all stages in the oil and gas journey. [They] explore for and produce oil and natural gas and transport it to [their] refineries, where [they] make it into products Canadians use every day".

At face value, many companies such as these are (finally) talking about climate solutions and sustainability. But their financial investment in such is one ray of sunshine shadowed by miles of emissions.
